Dogs are one of the friendliest animals known to humankind, and their link to their owners has always been popularly considered as pure and platonic. Once a person gets to bond with his pet dog, friendship forms naturally.

Since dogs are active animals, they can be prone to accidents, especially when you let them roam freely outside. It is likely that they will end up fighting with other animals running on the loose, or get hit by dashing cars. Because of such possibilities, an owner must not only know how to feed and love a dog but also the basics when it comes to dealing with wounds.

Before you start any attempted treatment, know that there is a downfall in trying to play veterinarian. Operating and taking charge of your dog’s wound may not be easy. In fact, it may even worsen the whole situation, so if the injury is severe, it is best that you leave it in the hands of a professional Ku Ring Gai vet like Gordon Vet.

While you can’t treat serious injuries, you can always deal with the minor ones that don’t require professional skills—you can cure them in your own home. Here are the steps to do it:

Keep Calm

Never get too panicky, and remember to retain a soothing low voice. Your dog can easily detect your distress. If you show signs of being worried, he’ll most likely fret, too. If both of you has that complete trust over each other, staying at ease will come easily.

Muzzle

If necessary, before you operate on a wound, muzzle your dog. Dogs tend to bite when distressed. It happens even when they don’t intend to do it. It is better that you stay safe.

Stop the Bleeding

Apply pressure on the wound to let the blood stop from flowing. Losing a lot of blood is not good, so retain the pressing until the blood clots. You can also use a plaster or band aid.

Cut the Hair

When the wound is covered with too much hair, clip it away. This will let you have a good look at the wounded area, and it keeps the wound from getting irritated.

Flush the Wound

With a syringe, you can flush out a dog’s wound with saline water. All you have to do is mix a cup of water with two tsp. of salt. Make sure that the wound looks glistening after cleaning the injured area.

Disinfect

To disinfect the wound, apply diluted Betadine on and around the area of the wound.

Put E-Collars

You can buy these collars to prevent a dog from licking and irritating their wounds.

Dry the Wound

Now that everything is clean, you can start drying the wound by gently patting it with a soft and clean cloth or gauze.

Keep Checking

Naturally, if the wound is minor, the curing process will not require too much intervention. Just keep checking its progress. If things are not going to well, bring your pet to the vet.

If curing your dog does not make you comfortable, you can always ask the help of the professionals. You can visit Gordon Vet website. This clinic tends to injuries, sicknesses, and has the cheapest dog tick treatment around the town.
