Barcelona Workshop: The first step

The first MEDSEC event consisted on an expert workshop organized by the Center for International Relations and Development Studies (Fundació CIDOB) and the Barcelona International Peace Resource Center (BIPRC) in co-operation with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), UNEP GRID-Arendal and the Zoï Environment Network, which took place in Barcelona on 25 - 27 March 2009

The results of the workshop is the report "Environment and Security issues in the Southern Mediterranean Region: Exploring and Mapping the Issues" (Click to download)

The report aims at describing how environmental degradation will affect human security in the Mediterranean space, with special attention on the Middle East and North Africa. It does so by studying how climate change and security are a dangerous mix in the southern Mediterranean region, followed by an analysis of how water scarcity and desertification lead to decreased agriculture output and migration flows. Energy security and natural resources are studied under the light of both co-operation and conflict potential.

The reports concludes with a short description of the way ahead and the summary of the mapping exercise.
